25-26 November 2015, Berne, Switzerland
(International IDEA, 2014)
About the Democracy ForumEvery year the Chair of the Council of Member States of International IDEA, in collaboration with the International IDEA Secretariat, organizes the Annual Democracy Forum. The Forum is a global event that brings together Member States and partners of International IDEA, politicians, policy makers, civil society and representatives of the academia from around the world to discuss a specific theme and formulate recommendations and policy proposals to advance the issue in question.
About This Year's Forum
Accountability is a key element of democracy. People in democracies are equipped with the necessary means to reward or sanction the performance of governments. Democratic accountability is based on the three fundamental principles of answerability, responsiveness and enforceability that allow citizens and their representatives to hold public officials and institutions to account.
As Chair of the Council of Member States of International IDEA in 2015, Switzerland has organized, with International IDEA, the Annual Democracy Forum on the theme “Accountability as a Central Element of Deepening Democracy”.
The synthesis document of the Forum made by International IDEA Secretary-General Yves Leterme and highlighting the main recommendations and challenges discussed is available here.
